The vast majority of our
trainees choose to stay with us at the end of their contract. We wouldn’t have
it any other way – after all, we are looking to take on and groom our future
associates and partners. To this end, we make sure our trainees in London,
Bristol and Birmingham gain the broadest possible experience of working for
high quality public and private sector clients.
We offer extremely competitive salaries plus a funding package to support you
through your studies before you join us. The training programme is carefully
structured to consist of practical work experience in conjunction with an
extensive educational programme.
The emphasis is on getting stuck in, learning and enjoying yourself. You’ll be
taking part in client meetings, doing your fair share of research and drafting
and attending court hearings from the off. While we
ensure you are supported each step of the way by your
supervising partner, buddy and mentor, you will be given real
responsibility very early on and you could soon be taking the first step
to becoming one of our partners.
Top-notch training
As
a Bevan Brittan trainee, you’ll be given the best possible foundation for
becoming a first rate solicitor – with us, we hope.
Gaining experience
The training contract is normally for two years. In that time you will complete
four six-month placements in at least three different departments. There may
also be the opportunity for you to spend time on secondment with one of our top
clients.
Building your skills
As part of your training, you’ll develop your overall professional skills,
including:
Drafting
Communicating with clients and other lawyers (taking instructions and giving
advice)
Research
Legal routines and procedures
Office routines, procedures and costs
Making you feel at home
In your first few weeks with us you’ll be given an extensive induction
programme welcoming you to the firm and introducing you to all its aspects,
from who’s who to how to use the various IT programmes. You’ll meet your buddy
(a second year trainee who’s just been through what you’re just beginning) and
your mentor (a qualified lawyer who’s on hand to give you help and advice
throughout your training).
Making the most of each placement
During each placement you’ll be part of a small team of qualified solicitors,
headed by a partner. From attending client meetings to carrying out research,
you’ll be expected to contribute to the team from day one – you’re a lawyer,
not a photocopier. Month by month, your supervising partner will check on your
progress and you’ll also have two formal reviews – one mid-way through your
placement and one at the end. At all times you’ll be supported and encouraged
in everything you do.
Investing in our people
As an Investor In People, Bevan Brittan offers a comprehensive, continuous
education programme for everyone in the firm, consisting of talks, lectures and
seminars aimed at developing the skills and commercial awareness you will need
to succeed in your legal career.
The first step in a brilliant
career
Your
training contract is only the beginning of what we hope will be a long and
glittering career with us.
We invest a great deal in developing the skills and experience of our trainees,
in order to set them on their way to becoming our future associates and
partners. This is why we aim to offer permanent opportunities to everyone who
has shown promise and a strong performance during their time as a trainee.
Trainees tend to stay with us not least because of the breadth and depth of
career opportunities on offer. Whichever area you decide to specialise in on
qualification, you can be sure that the quality of work and the variety of
clients will be second to none.
After four placements within different departments you will no doubt be in a
much better position to decide which area of law you’d like to concentrate on.
At the middle of your final placement, we will sit down and talk through your
preferences. We make every effort to ensure that the job you take up on
qualification is the right one for you, so that it becomes your first step on
your way to the top.
And the pay’s good too.…

Take a look at the table below to see which departmental placements we offer at each of our offices:

Vacation Placements
Our vacation placement scheme provides an invaluable
taste of life as a Bevan Brittan lawyer for anyone thinking
of training with us. We strongly recommend you take up this
opportunity ahead of applying for a training contract and
welcome applications from second year law students, third
year law and non law students, graduates and those looking
to change their career.
Placements are two weeks long and are available in June and
July in each of our three offices. During the placement you
will spend a week in two different departments enabling you
to gain first hand experience of two different practice
areas and get a taste of what life at Bevan Brittan is like.
You’ll be given real work to do and formal feedback on how
you’ve done by each member of staff you work for. In
addition to this there will be the opportunity to meet
current trainees and network with people across the firm to
find out more about the work and culture at Bevan Brittan.
It goes without saying that strong feedback from your
vacation placement will boost your chances of being
interviewed for a training contract with us.
The deadline for Vacation Placement applications is March 31
2008.
