My Background
Articled Veale Benson, qualified 1983. 18 years
experience of law and governance in local government. Posts
included Executive Director of Syniad - the improvement,
development and employers' agency for local government in
Wales - and Director of Corporate Services for South
Gloucestershire Council. Also worked for Avon County
Council, Wansdyke District and Bristol City Councils. Joined
Bevan Ashford as a partner in May 2002. Partner,
Bevan Brittan LLP 2004-.
What I do
I co-ordinate the firm's work across key areas of
activity involving central government, local government,
regional development agencies, audit and regulatory bodies
and government agencies. I also personally advise local
authorities and other public bodies on governance, vires and
related issues.
Some examples
Prior to joining Bevan Brittan I worked for four
councils and as the Executive Director for a local
government organisation. In these capacities I have managed
internal legal services, commissioned external legal support
on major projects and undertaken individual casework.
At Bevan Brittan I have advised on a range of matters
affecting public bodies including:
Issues relating to the vires of local authorities.
The establishment of Urban Regeneration Companies.
Issues concerning elected members' interests, the code of
conduct and liabilities on outside bodies.
